Overview on McAfee SiteAdvisor
First off for the ones that do not know what McAfee is, they are a corporation that creates anti virus/anti spyware software. They also created a little plug-in for internet browsers like FireFox called McAfee SiteAdvisor. In SiteAdvisor McAfee personally review the site. When they review a site they look at how many emails they receive from them over a period of time and judge if they are spam or not. Also if the site has any downloads for users McAfee will scan these downloads and scan them for viruses and ad-ware. It also even tells you the sites it is linked to and what rank those sites are. It even tells you what cookies it has on the site. Also users can leave comments on the site on the SiteAdisor page of the site, they can also put in a vote if the site is good or bad and for what reason. The ranks are: green for a safe site according to McAfee, yellow for, well caution, and red to warn you McAfee found stuff on the site that may harm your computer
If you get the plug-in for your browser, when you search in Google, Yahoo, or whatever search engine if your favorite, the site advisor will have a little button next to the link on every link in the search on that page. And if you hover the mouse over the button it will give you a brief description on why it was green, yellow, or red. This may help prevent you from going to a site that my harm your computer with a virus or tracking cookies.
Personal
My site just recently got GREENED! and I am very happy that it finally got looked at and passed their tests. Well it has not completed all the tests; it still is doing the how many e-mails it receives from me over a month. And I bet they will come back to the site and make sure it should remain green or if they need to change it.
How
Now four your site, if it has not yet been screened by McAfee SiteAdvisor, how to prepare for their visit:
- Do not sell users e-mails!
- If you have a newsletter do not spam users that receive them.
- Do not affiliate with “bad” websites.
- Do not have any program downloads with hidden viruses in them.
- Do not have ads with spyware tracking cookies in them.
That is all I can think of right now. I am sure I will think of more, and if you guys have any ideas leave a comment and I might just add it.
Getting too much spam on this post so shutting down comments just on this post.
